Family learning is not helping a child finish homework. Children and adults can read, write, talk, make, practice and build useful skills alongside each other, each at a level that fits them, with a shared reason to be there.

Family literacy may include
Reading and language, shared.

- Storytelling and talking, which is where reading actually starts.

- Building a reading routine that survives a busy week.
- Supporting a child who is still learning to decode.
- Activities that work across three generations in one room.
- Adult literacy, tied to something the adult wants for themselves.
Two-generation learning may include
One topic, two levels, both of you learning.
- Digital skills.
- Money and financial capability.
- College and career awareness.
- Entrepreneurship.
- Communication and speaking.
- Everyday academic skills.
- Family projects and challenges with something to show at the end.
The principle that makes it work
Nobody has to do identical work.
A shared topic can carry different goals, materials and activities for each person in the room. A nine year old and their grandmother can work on the same subject all afternoon and be learning genuinely different things.
That is the whole design. Programs that ask an adult to do a child's work embarrass the adult, and programs that ask a child to keep up with an adult lose the child in the first ten minutes.
