- Adult sessions run on weekday evenings, with some Saturday mornings. You give us the windows you can hold and we schedule inside them. Times are Eastern time.
- Hours
- Two to six hours a week to start, with more as your availability and enrollment allow.
- Starts
- Rolling. Sessions begin as soon as screening is verified and you are approved for your subjects and grade bands.
- Benefits
- This is a part time, as needed position and does not carry health, dental, vision, retirement or paid leave benefits. Paid sick leave is provided where state or local law requires it.
What is paid: Planning, preparing materials, writing session notes, required training, calibration and quality review meetings are all paid at your session rate. Skhillz does not ask for unpaid preparation or unpaid documentation.
This instructor supports adults strengthening academic foundations, preparing for high-school equivalency, returning to education, or moving toward college, training or work. Adult learners arrive with experience, responsibilities, strengths and history. The instructor is expected to teach with respect, structure, clarity and practical relevance.
What you would do
- Teach approved adult basic education and high-school equivalency content.
- Read intake and diagnostic information to find the starting point.
- Build individual and group learning plans within the approved model.
- Teach reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, digital skills and test readiness as assigned.
- Connect academic learning to work, college, money, civic life and the everyday.
- Support a sensible test-registration decision without pressing anybody to sit early.
- Keep attendance, progress, case notes and required reports.
- Refer to approved academic, technology, career, accessibility or community resources.
What we need
- A degree, or an approved equivalent combination of education and adult-learning experience.
- Experience teaching, tutoring or supporting adult learners.
- Demonstrated competence in the assigned subject areas.
- Respectful communication across varied educational and life backgrounds.
What would help
- Adult education, GED, literacy, ESL, workforce or postsecondary-transition experience.
- A teaching license, adult-education credential or relevant certification.
- Experience with virtual instruction and adult-learning technology.
- Experience working with workforce, training, college or case-management partners.
What success looks like
Progress may be movement from adult basic education into GED preparation, a completed GED, entry to college or a trade, readiness for work, or simply more independence. All of those count.
Where the line is: Never speak to an adult as though they were a child, or define them by the credential they have not finished yet.
Before anybody starts
No contact with children in this role. No learner contact and no learner records, so the screening is the shortest one.
Any offer made before screening and onboarding are finished is conditional. It does not authorize work, contact with a learner, a class assignment or access to learner information. A start date is confirmed only after every blocking requirement is complete and somebody else has verified it.
